What’s Inside?

  • Welcome to the new VAX 2 STOP CANCER CEO
  • Program Updates
  • Future Work in RURAL communities

Welcome Loren Gary

June 11, 2026

It is with much excitement and great expectations for VAX 2 STOP CANCER's future that we welcome our new CEO, Willam 'Loren' Gary.

A Birmingham native, Loren has spent more than 30 years in nonprofit management, philanthropy, communications and organizational development, in Alabama and Boston, MA. Most recently he was the CEO of Orpheus Consulting. We're excited to have his keen sense of community and relationship building skills to help expand our partner network and grow our programming capabilities.

Under Loren's leadership our commitment remains the same - we will continue to focus on provider education because WE KNOW that clinical staff are trusted by their patients, their vaccine recommendations are uniquely influential, and they have the power to increase HPV vaccination rates and prevent future cancers.

We look forward to entering this new chapter. We invite all of you to stand by Loren and Barbara (Founder Emeritus) as they fulfil their new leadership roles and move VAX 2 STOP CANCER ever closer to achieving its vision of eliminating HPV cancers in Alabama.

Loren and family (he and wife, Rebecca, are in the back row, 4th & 5th from the left)

"As Founder, Barbara built an organization that is making a measurable difference in cancer
prevention across Alabama," said Gary. "I am honored to continue that work and build upon the
strong foundation she has established. The opportunity to prevent six types of cancer through
vaccination is one of the most significant public health opportunities of our time, and VAX 2
STOP CANCER is uniquely positioned to lead that effort."

Turning our Attention to Rural Alabama

Adolescents in rural communities are less likely to be vaccinated against HPV than those in urban areas, which may exacerbate disparities in cancer outcomes experienced by rural residents.

Factors that attribute to this problem include:

  • barriers to accessing preventative healthcare services
  • rural residents' lack of knowledge of HPV's link to cancer and limited awareness of the HPV vaccine
  • weak communication between parents and health care providers about HPV vaccination

VAX 2 STOP CANCER can help change this narrative!

The purple shading shows the Alabama counties that VAX 2 STOP CANCER has not served yet. Most of these counties have a few things in common:

*They are rural

*They have low (less than 50%) HPV vaccination         uptake in the adolescent population

*They have few providers administering the HPV vaccine

We want to raise community HPV awareness and work with pediatric and family medicine providers in these counties.

If you have a connection to a healthcare professional or clinic in any of these areas, please let us know - a personal contact can make all the difference for successful implementation of our programs.

Happy 20th Anniversary to the HPV Vaccine!

20

YEARS

OLD

On June 8, 2006, the FDA approved the first vaccine against the human papillomavirus, marking one of the most important advances in public health over the past two decades. For 20 years, we have had the power to prevent cancer with this very safe and very effective vaccine.

HPV-Free Alabama, one shot at a time!
